It was in on 4 December 2018 that young Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg gave her famous speech to the COP, the Conference Of Parties, which raised the alarm with such urgency that it shamed all the world leaders in attendance and reopened the debate on the effects of climate change in no uncertain terms. Shortly afterwards, strikes against global warming began to take place right around the world. In fact, in some parts of our planet awareness of the need for a sustainable lifestyle has already grown a great deal in the last twenty years and in some sectors, such as the Italian ceramics industry, a number of practices have been in force for a very long time.
Pastorelli, a Del Conca Group brand, for example, recycles 100% of process water and all fired and unfired waste product. It returns the heat contained in the fumes from firing to the porcelain stoneware floor and wall tile production cycle, and only uses recycled cardboard. 70% of the plastic used also is recycled.
But it was in 2022 that Pastorelli made a game-changing investment leading to a major leap towards highly sustainable production, able to meet the needs of the present without reducing future generations’ scope for achieving their dreams. It installed a state-of-the-art porcelain stoneware tile and slab production plant in which the machines that use heat (spray dryer, dryer and kiln) and the co-generator are designed for greater energy efficiency, which will allow consumption and emissions to be reduced by a massive 3400 tons of CO2/year, the equivalent to 1,300 cars travelling 20,000 km/year. This modern plant is able to produce ceramic slabs up to size 180x360 cm and up to thickness 3 cm.
What’s more, since the plant is “Hydrogen Ready”, it will be possible to switch to a Natural Gas/Hydrogen mix as soon as this becomes available, further improving the environmental sustainability of the process.
In addition, an area of almost 60 thousand square metres accommodates a Logistics Hub with a very high storage capacity and a leading-edge automation system, which provides customers with a single collection point for material from different company plants. Today 100% of the electricity used by this Logistics Hub is generated completely in-house. Maximum energy efficiency and minimum environmental impact.
Last but not least, the company has already begun the introduction to its fleet of 100% electric cars powered by energy produced in-house, and from this year catalogues are printed on FSC certified paper, guaranteed to come from trees in forests managed to extremely strict environmental and social standards.
Pastorelli has been committed for a long time to achieving the aim of conserving the environment and natural resources, and limiting energy use. This constantly, carefully implemented commitment sets out to provide our customers with a product of high technical and aesthetic quality manufactured with a responsible, sustainable approach to the environment.
